Tips on Selecting Credit Cards

There are a myriad of options when it comes to choosing a credit card. For selecting a general credit card that is not specifically for purchasing gas or traveling with here are some basic tips:

  1. Shop around for the lowest interest rate and know the policies regarding interest rate raises. Department store credit cards are highly discouraged as the interest rate is usually much higher and you are limited to using it at that particular store. Many times you only get a discount on the initial purchase to open the card, so there is no benefit thereafter.
  2. Try and find a card that has no annual fee.  If one is not available then make sure you select one that is as low as possible.
  3. Choose credit cards that have grace periods and a grace period of 25 days is preferred.
  4. Refuse cards that come with a 24 day billing cycle as this can be very disadvantageous for interest accruing.
  5. Watch out for cards that have crazy late payment fees.
  6. Select a card that offers some type of buyer protection policy for large purchases.

Shop around and find the best deal! There are many credit card comparison sites on the Web so do your homework.
